40°N, 70°W sits in the Atlantic south of New England. When a coastal low moves up the East Coast, forecasters use that point as a benchmark for talking about its track. A shift east or west can change where the strongest forcing and Atlantic moisture set up, and where the rain-snow line lands.
It is a useful reference, never a magic line. A storm near 40/70 can still deliver very different outcomes depending on its intensity, structure, temperature profile and full path. That uncertainty is part of why we keep watching.
